"Pope" is devoted to the history of Pskov Orthodox mission, operating in the World War II in the occupied, by German troops, territory of Northwest dioceses of Russia: St. Petersburg, Novgorod and Pskov, as well as the Baltic states.
Pskov mission was and remains the only well-organized full-scale event, that brought many good things by the motion of priests, clergy and laity, working for the glory of God in the huge space of the North-West of Russia. According to researcher V. Alexeev and F. Stavr "as a whole, on scale and intensity, this religious revival could be called the second baptism of Russia".
Initiator of the Mission was active arch-priest - metropolitan Vilensky and Lithuanian Sergy (Voskresensky). In conditions of German occupation, he managed to preserve the unity of the Baltic canonical dioceses with the Russian Orthodox Church.
This film project has received support of President of the Russian Federation and the Federal Agency for Culture and Cinematography.

This is a story of people of honour, about such rare, in our time, notions of patriotism and sense of duty. This story is not about one individual hero who saves the world, but of an entire group of people united by one goal and single moral principles that allow them to do the impossible. There are no analogues of this legendary event in the world practice and probably there will never be…
Main characters of the film are the commander and three officers of the "Alpha" group, as well as a fighter of "Muslim" GRU special forces battalion. They have become direct witnesses and participants of the revolution in Afghanistan, and heroes of unprecedented force operation of Russian special forces with the aim of elimination of dictator Amin in an attempt to keep this country in the sphere of his influence and prevent large-scale bloodshed.
Film begins at a secret site, where fighters of elite special units are trained. Despite the status of Supermen, these young officers are ordinary people with their problems, complexes, contradictions and dignity. Interplay of relationships becomes apparent, and characters of heroes emerge, who will go side by side under the shower of bullets against superior enemy forces.
Meanwhile, in Afghanistan a small detachment of Mujahideens shoot down a helicopter, carrying a high-ranking Soviet intelligence resident who was on his way to secret talks with the spiritual leaders of the Afghan opposition. Resident with a mysterious case, which can not be opened, without destroying its content, first it is acquired by Mujahedeens, but after a while appears behind the walls of Taj Beck Palace, in the hands of Dzhandad - known for his brutality Guard chief of Amin. This is a story of rich teenagers, experienced in extreme sports, who, looking for new excitement and adventures, decided to travel to Afghanistan on bikes.
Inspired by the father of one of the characters – war hero of Afghan war – they turn up in one of the hottest spots of the modern world, where war still takes its heavy toll, where there’s no victors – only victims. The brutality of war a shock for the characters – they never imagined it to be so brutal. It’s a place where risks can’t be calculated, where there’s no safety net, where danger is real and death looks straight in the eye.
The events of the story are always on the edge of risk – between life and death. The film rises the question of humanism in modern world. It captures the fear and the pain, understanding of how much the real war is different from computer shooters, and how the human relationships surpass any social status barriers.
